The Morkie is an adorable cross of a purebred Yorkshire Terrier and a purebred Maltese. Both parent breeds have similar looks and size, and both have non-allergenic HAIR instead of FUR, so they’re great for people with allergies. Where they differ is personality and coat colour.

Two different personalities

Yorkies are active, bright little dogs with very big personalities. In fact, they need plenty of socialization and training to keep that big personality on track or they can become too assertive and even bossy. Though small, the Yorkshire Terrier is active, loves attention and is protective of his owners. The Yorkie is no lapdog.

Bred thousands of years ago, Maltese dogs were developed to be pampered lapdogs, and they take that job seriously. They are among the most gentle of all dogs, and are sweet natured and affectionate. Maltese are the ideal companion – loyal, loving and devoted.

A wide variety of coat colours

Morkies come in a wide combination of colours, even within the same litter. Some will be a solid colour, from beige to dark brown or nearly black.
Some Morkies have two primary colours: white and brown, or white and black; or black and brown. Other coats are three or more colours, including a warm, taffy brown, darker brown, grey, white, beige and more.

To really get to know your Morkie and why he behaves and looks the way he does, you’ll want to learn more about the founding breeds: the Yorkshire Terrier and the Maltese dog.

Every breed has a downside

Morkies, Yorkies and Maltese are no exception.

Small, delicate dogs, they are not for families with small children. They’re very loving and loyal, but all 3 are known to be challenging to housebreak or potty train.

Plus, all three breeds can bark too much under the wrong circumstances. However they can be trained to control that excess barking. ”Read
